President Donald Trump has called for the death penalty for DeCarlos Brown Jr., the suspect arrested for fatally stabbing a Ukrainian woman on a Charlotte, North Carolina, light rail train.

"The ANIMAL who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine, who came to America searching for peace and safety, should be given a 'Quick' (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded THE DEATH PENALTY. There can be no other option!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday.

Brown was seated behind the victim, 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, when he was seen on surveillance footage suddenly pulling out a pocket knife and stabbing her repeatedly. The graphic security footage showed Brown calmly walking away with blood dripping from his knife and hand while bystanders failed to help the dying woman.

Trump signed an executive order in January restoring the federal death penalty, reversing a moratorium enacted under the Biden administration. On Tuesday, the Department of Justice charged Brown with “committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system,” a crime that makes him eligible for capital punishment.

“Iryna Zarutska was a young woman living the American dream — her horrific murder is a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. “I have directed my attorneys to federally prosecute DeCarlos Brown Jr., a repeat violent offender with a history of violent crime, for murder. We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence — he will never again see the light of day as a free man.”

If convicted of the crime, Brown faces a maximum sentence of life in prison or death. However, his sentence will be determined by the Court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and statutory factors.
