Trump slams McConnell for midterm setback

"Also, the people that pushed so hard, for decades, against abortion, got their wish from the U.S. Supreme Court, & just plain disappeared, not to be seen again. Plus, Mitch stupid $'s!" Trump wrote.

Donald Trump took to social media on Sunday to insist that he wasn't to blame for the GOP not living up to "expectations in the MidTerms," instead pointing the blame at Mitch McConnell, as well as the party's mishandling of the "abortion issue."

"It wasn’t my fault that the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the MidTerms," the former president began his post on the conservative social media site Truth Social.

"I was 233-20!" relating to the success rate of Trump-backed candidates during the election.

"It was the 'abortion issue,' poorly handled by many Republicans, especially those that firmly insisted on No Exceptions, even in the case of Rape, Incest, or Life of the Mother, that lost large numbers of Voters."

"Also, the people that pushed so hard, for decades, against abortion, got their wish from the U.S. Supreme Court, & just plain disappeared, not to be seen again. Plus, Mitch stupid $'s!" he added, referring to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump has been relentlessly critical of McConnell, repeatedly attacking the Senate leader ever since he voted to impeach the former president following the January 6 riots in 2021.

Just days after the midterm elections, Trump defended attacks from Republicans who placed blame on him for their party's results.

"For those many people that are being fed the fake narrative from the corrupt media that I am Angry about the Midterms, don’t believe it," he posted on Truth Social at the time. "I am not at all angry, did a great job (I wasn’t the one running!), and am very busy looking into the future."

"Remember, I am a 'stable genius,'" he added.

Immediately after election day, Republicans started pointing fingers at the former President, following several high-profile losses of Trump-backed candidates, including Lee Zeldin in New York, Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, Kari Lake in Arizona and Herschel Walker in Georgia, according to the New York Post.

Republicans succeeded in taking control of the House, but the Democrats held on to the Senate, despite a widely anticipated "red wave" that took into account Biden's disastrous track record related to record-high inflation, rising crime, and a worsening border crisis.

McConnell blamed the Republicans' midterm performance on "candidate quality" issues, particularly relating to Trump-backed candidates, who continued to deny the results of the 2020 election.

"Our ability to control primary outcomes was quite limited in '22 because the support of the former president proved to be very decisive in these primaries so my view was do the best with the cards you're dealt," McConnell said last month.

"Hopefully in the next cycle, we'll have quality candidates everywhere and a better outcome," he added.
