A yet-to-be-opened Michigan private camp community defines “guy” as people with male genitalia and a state-issued ID that confirms them as male, faces accusations of transphobia after banning trans men.
LGBTQ Nation has a breakdown of the social media backlash against the Camp Boomerang RV Park and Campground.
The issue was first brought to light on social media last week by part-time photographer Jay Steele. He shared a post from Boomerang's co-owner that seemed to scary off potential members. Steele urges others in the gay community to stay away. “Do not go there. The owner will not allow trans men in as I finally got it in written proof of the rules,” he tweeted (Steele also gives an 18+ content warning for his Twitter account since he’s aspiring to get involved in the gay porn industry).
Co-owner Bryan Quinn defended the decision by stating "being a 'private membership-only entity' allows us all the ability to build a like-minded atmosphere." More commonly known as the private company defense.
This turned off some potential membership. Michael Champagne and his boyfriend visited CreekRidge Campground in Stockbridge. Michigan. They reportedly had no issue having transgender friends tag along for the outing. Mr. Champagne sees Boomerang’s move as alienating and won’t visit their campground out of protest.
A point of contention for those opposing the upcoming private campground came when someone questioned whether or not “penis checks” would be conducted. Co-owner Bryan Quinn scoffed at the notion, however followed-up by saying “if we let women that act like men in, and they go naked at the pool, that’s when it’s obvious that there’s no penis. Sorry to put it bluntly. But if you don’t like the rules, quietly leave.”
Camp Boomerang deleted their Facebook page in light of the controversy.
