Washington DC-based US Attorney Michael Sherwin has announced that his office has opened a formal investigation into the death of Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter and Air Force veteran who was shot and killed by a police officer during the violence at the Capitol on Wednesday.

According to CBS News’ Catherine Herridge, Sherwin’s office confirmed that it has opened a federal excessive force investigation in relation to Babbitt’s shooting. Babbitt, who was reportedly unarmed, was killed when she attempted to climb through a broken window in the halls of Congress during the riot.

According to Herridge, Sherwin has assigned his office’s civil rights section to be lead prosecutors on the case, which is currently under investigation by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the DC Metropolitan Police Department.

The office has also opened a homicide investigation into the death of Capitol Hill Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who was injured during the riot on Wednesday and later died of his injuries. Rioters attacked officers in close quarters with metal pipes and chemical irritants including tear gas and pepper spray, as evidenced by video posted on social media.
