"Individual decisions versus not doing individual decisions is the difference between winning and losing — and you're not going to lose."
According to The New York Times, several countries are lobbying the UN for a binding resolution restricting the use of AI “killer drones,” but the US, Russia, Australia, Israel, and other nations are resisting the move and favoring a non-binding resolution instead.
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told The Times, "Individual decisions versus not doing individual decisions is the difference between winning and losing — and you're not going to lose."
He added, "I don't think people we would be up against would do that, and it would give them a huge advantage if we put that limitation on ourselves."
Earlier this year it was reported that the Pentagon is already working on thousands of AI-enabled drones.
According to Reuters, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, said in August that technology like AI-controlled drones would help counteract China's numerical advantage in people and weapons. "We'll counter the PLA's mass with mass of our own, but ours will be harder to plan for, harder to hit, harder to beat."
In October it was reported that AI-controlled drones have already been deployed by Ukraine in its war against Russian.
