The three murder victims were identified as second-year student Devin Chandler, third-year student Lavel Davis, and fourth-year student D'Sean Perry.
Ryan Lynch, a 19-year-old pre-med student who was with them on the bus, told Philadelphia's KYW-TV in an on-camera interview, that the outing was supposed to be a "bonding experience" for the class, and that she was as surprised as anyone when Jones suddenly pulled out a gun as the bus was rolling back into campus.
"Chris got up and pushed Lavel [Davis]. And then after he pushed him, he was like, 'You guys are always messing with me.' He said something weird like that. But it was very bizarre because they didn't talk to him the whole trip," Lynch recalled. "We thought he was going to shoot everyone on the bus at that point."
"There just kept coming more and more gunshots. The shooter then sort of, just walked or skipped off the bus when I saw him pass," she added.
Jones was taken into custody after on Monday morning after a 13-hour overnight manhunt undertaken by numerous law enforcement agencies. He has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder, and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The suspect was already known to police, having been involved in "a criminal incident involving a concealed weapon violation that occurred outside the city of Charlottesville in February 2021."
He had also previously faced a university investigation into a hazing incident, but that investigation was ultimately closed due to witnesses who would not cooperate with the process.
