A U.S. Army veteran has started a grassroots GoFundMe campaign to raise the $5 billion dollars needed to fund the construction of a U.S. - Mexico border wall.

Created only 4 days ago on December 16, the campaign has already raised over $7 million dollars from 114,000 donors and counting.

Although this is a far cry from the $5 billion needed to fund the project, it’s still a remarkable amount to amass in a such a short period of time. Based upon the current figures, the average donor is giving approximately $60 towards the wall building efforts.

Fundraiser started by a decorated Veteran

Writing about his rationale for starting the fund, Brian Kolfage, a triple amputee who lost his limbs while serving in Iraq with the U.S. Air Force, said that the wall is needed to “ensure future generations have everything we have today.”

He goes on to say “Too many Americans have been murdered by illegal aliens and too many illegals are taking advantage of  the United States taxpayers with no means of ever contributing to our society. I have grandparents who immigrated to America legally, they did it the correct way and it's time we uphold our laws, and get this wall BUILT! It’s up to Americans to help out and pitch in to get this project rolling.”

Kolfage points out that if all of the 63 million Americans who voted for President Trump were to donate $80, that would be enough to get the wall built.

During the campaign and throughout his presidency, Trump has repeatedly claimed that Mexico will be paying for the border wall. However, nearly two years later, the wall has not been built, only upgraded in a few areas, and Mexico has not cut any cheques to fund its construction.

Despite these facts, Trump has insisted Mexico will still be paying for the wall thanks to the revenue coming into the U.S. on account of the new USMCA trade deal. Whether this is true or not, what’s clear is that Congress will not be funding the wall anytime soon.

In the meantime, Kolfage and thousands of others like him are hoping that the American public will step up to donate the funds, despite a majority of them not seeing the wall as a top priority.

Even if the fund does not make it to its ambitious $5 billion dollar target, currently capped at 1 billion by GoFundMe, Kolfage hopes it will “jumpstart things” and make it easier for President Trump to secure the remaining funds from “our politicians.”

Congressman introduces "Border Bonds"

In order to make sure these funds go directly towards the wall building efforts, congressman Steven Palazzo of Mississippi has introduced the “Border Bonds for America Act.”

This legislation would allow American citizens to purchase “border bonds” in a similar fashion to when Americans purchased $185 billion in war bonds to fund their World War II efforts.

Palazzo called the Act “a safe investment into the safety and security of our country”, and “an alternative way to safely invest in border security.”
