House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in a press conference on Capitol Hill on Wednesday that the $1.9 trillion stimulus package recently passed by Congress is "the most consequential legislation that many of us will ever be a party to."

"We celebrate because we are honoring a promise made by our President," Pelosi continued. "Help is on the way."

The bill has now been passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, with both chambers of Congress voting along party lines.

Democrats have argued that the bill is necessary in order to stimulate the American economy as the country's economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown measures which left many businesses closed.

Despite voting in favor of the legislation, many progressives have expressed concern with the bill, particularly after the amendment to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour was dropped.

Republicans, however, have argued that the bill does not do enough to help the nation's struggling economy and rather focuses on appealing to special interest groups aligned with the Democratic Party. Republicans have pointed to the bill's funding for abortion and the bill's lack of measures to reopen schools across the country.

Republicans have additionally expressed concern over the price tag of the stimulus, arguing that it saddles future generations with even more debt as the country struggles financially.

Some have also taken aim at the $1,400 stimulus check included in the package, with observers noting that it falls short of the $2,000 previously promised by President Joe Biden.

The bill will not become a law until it is signed by President Biden.
