During a meeting before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, Liberal Health Minister Patty Hajdu admitted that the evidence supporting hotel quarantine over at-home quarantine is "incomplete."
The Trudeau government implemented a policy earlier this year requiring that travelers arriving in Canada quarantine in hotels for three days upon arrival. Arrivals are not allowed to leave the hotel or return home during this time, and are forced to cover the cost of their own hotel stay.
Travelers had previously been asked to quarantine at home for 14 days after arriving in the country.
Upon being asked by Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner what evidence there is to support the policy, Hajdu told Rempel that "the data is incomplete."
The policy, upon its announcement, immediately came under criticism from conservatives and civil libertarians, who have argued that it amounts to arbitrary detention without cause or trial and that there was no evidence supporting the efficacy of the measure in limiting the spread of coronavirus.
Increased scrutiny came to the program after multiple women became victims of sexual assault while staying in these hotels and videos emerged showing some of the hotels appearing to be having food shortages.
