At a school board meeting in Montgomery County, Virg., an angry mother confronted a school board member over masking. The mother showed photos of the school board member unmasked in public. The mother said that parents were ready to take back their power from school boards.
The school board member, instead of facing the crowd, stormed out of the meeting without an explanation.
"Senate Bill 739, as you guys probably know, is going to be signed into law very soon and so we’re taking the power out of your hands and putting it back with the parents, the way it should be," said the mother to all present.
She continued, commenting that "it’s very concerning that you guys would take the power away from the parents." She then indicated the specific board member whose photo she was about to reveal, stating:
"Introducing the public address comment, you said, 'This is the time we get to hear from the students, from the staff, and from the community members.' You didn’t mention parents, not one bit. And I think that’s a big issue for Montgomery County, because you guys do not like the parents."
"That’s how I feel, because you’re taking the choice away from the parents and you’re trying to take it and put it into your hands — for financial reasons? I don’t know."
The irate mother then pivoted to the hypocrisy she perceived in the board in the wake of the election of Glenn Youngkin (R) as the new governor of the state of Virginia:
"We sat here last year and listened to you guys preach to us about Governor Northam’s executive orders. Why is it different from the last year when we were here to this year?"
"Two different governors, two different political parties. So we were supposed to follow it last year but not this year. That makes no sense and makes all of you a bunch of hypocrites."
At this point is where the woman showed photos of the unmasked board member, saying, "Here’s a picture of you. Right here, on Facebook, with a crowd of people, "
"That's it!" the board member exclaimed, visibly fuming. The mother continued, "with no mask on," the woman continued, criticizing the board member for the interruption. "This is my time, and I don’t interrupt you."
At this point they cut the woman's mic off, but she kept talking and challenging the board member, "Really? Are you that scared?" she said.
The board member fired back "No I'm not scared; I don't care," although she was visibly highly emotional at that point.
An officer was called to remove the mother, but he wound up thinking the better of it and returned to his post at the door. This is when the board member shouted "I'm done! Either she leaves or I do," right before storming out.
