West Virginia will send hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, DC, in support of the Trump administration’s effort to combat violent crime in the district.

Between 300 and 400 troops from the West Virginia National Guard will be deployed at the request of the administration. The operation will be fully funded by the federal government.

“At the request of the Trump administration, I have directed the [West Virginia National Guard] to support the President’s initiative to make D.C. safe and beautiful. We are deploying 300-400 skilled personnel to the nation’s capital, reflecting our commitment to a strong and secure America,” Governor Patrick Morrisey said.

“West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation’s capital,” the governor added in a statement. “The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America.”

West Virginia Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, who will lead the troops, said the initiative “aligns with our values of service and dedication to our communities.”

“We stand ready to support our partners in the National Capital Region and contribute to the collective effort of making our nation’s capital a clean and safe environment. The National Guard’s unique capabilities and preparedness make it an invaluable partner in this important undertaking,” Seward said.

The move comes as the Trump administration recently assumed federal control of the Metropolitan Police Department and deployed National Guard units in DC. The troops are not making arrests but are providing valuable assistance to law enforcement in a sweeping crackdown on crime.

A White House official told CNN the West Virginia troops are part of “Trump’s ongoing effort to make DC safe and beautiful,” and the “National Guard’s role has not changed.”

“The National Guard will protect federal assets, create a safe environment for law enforcement officials to carry out their duties when required, and provide a visible presence to deter crime,” the official added.
