Dr. Gaya Gamhewage has been appointed on Thursday by the World Health Organization (WHO) to a newly-created position. Se will be responsible for working internally within the organization to to fight sexual exploitation.

Dr. Gamhewage, who is considered within the organization to be an expert in handling emergencies, will report directly to the Director General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

According to the Daily Caller, Dr. Gamhewage has also in the recent past spoken out repeatedly about the "culture that allows women to be treated in this way not just by armed militants but also by our own colleagues" within the WHO.

A report from Oct. 2020 indicated that many WHO staff there for ostensible humanitarian reasons were implicated in sexual abuse and misconduct scandals, particularly during an Ebola outbreak in Congo in 2018.

The report detailed that many of the WHO workers solicited and received sexual favours as a sort of de facto "employment passport" when it came time to hire people locally.

“I really want  to be courageous enough to start making changes before this investigation is over, starting with our workplace and going all the way to the field. Training is not going to solve this problem."
