"As far as I understand, Tucker Carlson got what he wanted," a Russian journalist posted on X.
There had been much speculation about a potential sit-down between the Russian leader and the former Fox News host following sightings of the latter in the Russian capital, and it appears to have been confirmed by a source within the country.
"As far as I understand, Tucker Carlson got what he wanted," journalist Alexei Venediktov posted on X on Tuesday, translated into English.
Venediktov is the former editor-in-chief of Ekho Moskvy, a liberal radio station that was shut down when Putin cracked down on media critical of him and the Kremlin.
The Financial Times' Moscow bureau chief Max Seddon shared Venediktov's post, adding, "If Tucker Carlson is getting the first Putin interview to western media since Russia invaded Ukraine, it'll be for a platform – Twitter/X – that's banned in Russia, and to a journalist whose show Russian state TV has been pirating."
Carlson was spotted attending the play "Spartacus" at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow on Saturday, and when photos of his appearance were posted online, rumors began popping up regarding his reason for visiting the country."I tried to interview Vladimir Putin, and the U.S. government stopped me," Carlson said in an article published the Swiss outlet Die Weltwoche last September. "By the way, nobody defended me. I don't think there was anybody in the news media who said, 'Wait a second. I may not like this guy, but he has a right to interview anyone he wants, and we have a right to hear what Putin says.'"
