Leftist New York Attorney General Letitia James has drawn controversy after she announced that she would host a "Drag Story Hour" in New York City, specifically targeting families with children.

James announced the event on Instagram and Twitter, with the event set to feature drag performers reading to children. The event is titled "Drag Story Hour NYC with New York State Attorney General Letitia James," and will be co-sponsored by several organizations, including The Pride Center of Staten Island and the Queens Public Library. The flyer for the event invites "families with children."

Other lawmakers throwing the event with James include State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Assemblymembers Deborah Glick, Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, Daniel O’Donnell, Tony Simone, and Council Members Erik Bottcher, Tiffany Caban, Crystal Hudson, Shekar Krishnan, Chi Ossé, and Lynn Schulman.

Hoylman is an openly gay politician and has been a leading voice for LGBTQ+ rights, having authored legislation to ban the use of so-called "gay conversion therapy" on minors in New York State. He has been known to repeat the claim that "trans women are women," and sponsored a bill making New York a "sanctuary state" for children seeking medical gender transition.

"Families with children are very welcome. Hate-fueled bigotry is not," he wrote.

James' event comes on the heels of another drag-related controversy from Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration moved to revoke a hotel's liquor license after it hosted a "sexually explicit" Christmas-themed drag show with children present.

James' office has not yet made a public statement in response to the controversy. The event is set to take place on Sunday, March 20.
