A woman who killed a cyclist while driving under the influence of alcohol in 2015 has had her parole revoked after she was caught drunk driving again, CTV News reports.
"Despite taking a life, while driving under the influence of alcohol, you chose to, once again, drive after drinking alcohol," the Parole Board of Canada stated in their decision.
The parole board noted that Darya Selinevich, a former York University law student, had chosen to once again put lives at risk even "despite having completed programming, demonstrating a period of sobriety and showing positive process."
"Clearly, you had resumed your offence cycle," the parole board declared.
Selinevich struck and killed Zeyong Kang, the father of a teenager, while driving at nearly twice the speed limit under the influence of alcohol. According to the parole board, she had fled the scene at more than 200 km per hour after striking the man in an attempt to evade justice. "When police arrived, they smelled an odour of alcohol on [her] breath."
Selinevich later pleaded guilty to the act, and in January 2017 was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. She was granted parole in October of the next year under the condition that she avoid alcohol and alcohol-serving establishments. According to court records, her remorse for the incident "appeared genuine."
In June of 2020, Selinevich's vehicle was reported to police after a bystander noticed her vehicle swerving side to side on Highway 400 and nearly colliding with a number of vehicles. Selinevich, who was driving without a valid license, denied that she was intoxicated when police arrived despite there being an empty beer bottle in the back seat and the vehicle smelling of alcohol.
Two months later, Selinevich was sentenced to another 18 months in jail to be served consecutively with her ongoing sentence for which her parole was revoked. She was also served an additional six-month sentence for driving under the influence and a three-year driving ban. The parole board described her as an "undue risk to society."
"You have not demonstrated an ability to follow the conditions of parole, driving prohibitions, or the law," the parole board declared. "You have not demonstrated that your risk is manageable on parole nor have you presented a plan for parole that manages the serious and grave public safety risks your return to drinking and driving has caused."
