On Monday, gunmen opened fire from a white BMW sedan in the Bronx right outside of the office of New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, leaving one person injured from a gunshot wound to the head.

According to the New York Post, NYPD sources said at least 10 shots were fired from the car and they suspected multiple gunmen were responsible. A staffer for Heastie called 911 and later told the outlet only that they "heard the shooting."

The shooting happened around 3 pm at Gun Hill Road and Fenton Avenue and it is unknown if the Assembly Speaker was in his office during the incident.

The victim's identity was not revealed but they did receive life-threatening injuries to the head and were taken to Jacobi Hospital Medical Center.

No motive has been leased by authorities and no arrests have been made,

In 2019, several justice reform laws were passed in NYC, including a cashless bail law that made it difficult for judges to set a bail for offenders who commit nonviolent crimes. Heastie was a vocal supporter of those reforms.

The Assembly Speaker also supported the state’s "Raise the Age" law, "which upped the age for criminal liability for suspects to 18," reports the Post and according to the outlet "Heastie said he was boycotting The Post for taking him to task on his stance on the reforms" in February.

There were 433 murders in NYC in 2022, down slightly from 488 murders in 2021, but overall major crime in NYC is up 23 percent.
