The resolution condemned "Mohammed Sabry Soliman and his antisemitic terrorist attack on peaceful demonstrators supporting the release of the hostages held by Hamas."
Only 75 Democrats out of all in the House joined to vote in favor of the resolution, introduced by Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO), and it passed 280 to 113. Those Democrats who opposed the resolution said they did so because, in their view, the language was weaponized politically, according to Fox News.
The resolution said that those who voted in favor of it would condemn "Mohammed Sabry Soliman and his antisemitic terrorist attack on peaceful demonstrators supporting the release of the hostages held by Hamas," but also in the resolution, the point is made that "free and open communication between State and local law enforcement and their Federal counterparts remains the bedrock of public safety and is necessary in preventing terrorist attacks."
Because Soliman was an illegal immigrant and was able to carry out the attack after entering the US under the Biden administration, attention has been drawn to his immigration status by Republicans as all the more reason for strict border and immigration enforcement.
Although a large share of Democrats voted against the resolution, a similar bill from Reps. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) as well as Joe Neguse (D-CO) gained far more support, but it did not include the subject of immigration and spoke about antisemitism more broadly.
The Democrats possibly took issue with the advocacy of “open communication” between state and federal law enforcement in the resolution, which would buck against sanctuary status for jurisdictions, usually controlled by Democrats. The resolution also added that the case “demonstrates the dangers of not removing from the country aliens who fail to comply with the terms of their visas.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was critical of Evans’ resolution: "Who is this guy? He's not seriously concerned with combating antisemitism in America. This is not a serious effort. Antisemitism is a scourge on America. It shouldn't be weaponized politically,” he added.
Evans, who previously served as a police officer in Colorado, said on X, "I served our nation in uniform in the Middle East, as a cop in Colorado, & now as a Congressman. This wildly offensive sentiment from Democrat’s Leader is why antisemitism persists. The Left is unserious about finding real solutions."
