An estimated $14 million worth of cocaine was seized by officers last month after they pulled over a vehicle at the Peace Bridge, The Canada Border Services Agency said.
CP24 reports that the seizure happened on June 15, after officers pulled over a commercial truck driven by a Quebec resident. The person was trying to enter Canada using the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, Ontario.
Border agents allegedly discovered 112.5 kg of cocaine hidden in five duffle bags while searching the truck, leading to the arrest of the driver, who was put into custody of the RCMP.
The man, 24-year-old Pardeep Singh of LaSalle, was then charged with importation of a controlled substance. He is set to appear in a St Catherines courthouse Friday.
In a statement, CBSA District Director Kim Upper praised the seizure of the drugs, citing it as an example of the agency's "integral role" in keeping illegal drugs off the streets.
"Our officers have interrupted the smuggling attempt of a massive amount of narcotics, and have put a full stop to the ripple effect these narcotics would have in neighborhoods across our country," said Upper. "The CBSA is extremely proud of its officers and their ongoing role in safeguarding our borders."
