An 88-year-old man is dead and his 86-year-old wife is recovering after a violent home invasion in Saint-Hubert early Sunday morning, marking one of the most disturbing attacks in the area in years, reports CTV News.

Longueuil police say officers were called to Renaud Street just after 2 am for reports of a break-in in progress. When officers entered the home, they found the elderly couple badly injured. Both were taken to the hospital, where the man later died. His wife suffered upper-body injuries but remained in stable condition, according to police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre.

A 19-year-old woman, identified as Lydia Ghorici, was detained at the scene and questioned by investigators. Police initially referred to her as a person of interest, and have not confirmed whether she had any prior connection to the victims. Ghorici has a small online presence as a rapper, though police have not commented on whether that played any role in the case.

By Monday, charges were filed. Prosecutors announced Ghorici is now facing second-degree murder, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, breaking and entering, and theft. Second-degree murder in Canada indicates the killing is believed to be intentional but not premeditated.

The attack has shaken residents of Saint-Hubert, a normally quiet, residential part of Montreal’s South Shore. Violent home invasions, especially against seniors, are uncommon in Quebec. investigators have not said whether this was a robbery gone wrong or a targeted assault.

Police say 911 callers reported an active break-in, suggesting the couple may have been asleep when the intruder entered. Investigators spent the day processing the home, and more information about the suspect’s movements—and whether she acted alone—could emerge as the forensic work continues.
