Around 20,000 federal workers have taken the "buyout" offer from the Trump administration to quit their jobs, but get paid for eight months afterward in a severance package.

According to a report from Axios, an official in the Trump administration told the outlet that around 20,000 federal workers, or about 1 percent of the federal workforce, have taken the offer to resign almost immediately and get full pay until September 1. The number is not the 5-10 percent that the Trump administration was hoping for, however, the official told the outlet that they expect more workers to take the offer.

"We expect more to come. If you see what's happening at USAID, it's just one piece of the puzzle," the official told the outlet. Aside from the resignations, the Trump administration is trying to implement a hiring freeze in different agencies as well. However, this has proven to be tricky as some agencies are just bringing in new hires.

The offer to resign and take the severance package is open until Thursday, and the number of federal employees who decide to quit could still rise before that time comes. The offer was given to all federal employees with the exception of those who are working in the armed forces, the Postal Service, as well as working in immigration or national security.

The offer from the Trump admin has been aligned with the president's effort to cut back on costs, as well as shrink the scope of the federal government.
