The mob launched fireworks, threw rocks, deployed smoke grenades, shattered windows, and forced entry into the ICE building.
The unrest came after a “No Kings” event that began earlier in the day around 1 pm. Thousands gathered in the city for what officials called a “free speech gathering.” According to Fox News, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the mob launched fireworks, threw rocks, deployed smoke grenades, shattered windows, and forced entry into the ICE building. Four federal officers were injured in the chaos. Authorities ultimately regained control and secured the facility.
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said in a press release Sunday that officers responded to ongoing criminal activity in the area.
PPB confirmed the arrest of 25-year-old Sabian Crisantos shortly after 8 pm for attempted assault on a public safety officer. Around 10:50 pm, 20-year-old Tyson Kahnert was arrested for allegedly throwing a rock at the ICE building. A third individual, 38-year-old Cory Oien, was taken into custody around 1 am Sunday after reportedly picking up traffic control devices, placing them in his truck, and driving under the influence.
"The arrests were strictly focused on criminal actions, and not constitutionally protected free speech," PPB said. "Individuals who engaged in violent activity or property destruction will be investigated and are subject to arrest and prosecution."
Police arrived at the ICE facility around 6 pm after reports that a federal officer was injured by the crowd. Authorities informed rioters that a medical event was reported inside the building and warned against interference. After stabilizing the situation, police determined the officer did not require medical treatment but declared the gathering a riot due to escalating violence.
Portland police added that arrests may continue in the days following the riot. "Just because arrests are not made at the scene, when tensions are high, that does not mean that people are not being charged with crimes later," PPB added.
