On Thursday morning, Virginia's ACLU chapter posted the message "YOU ARE ON NATIVE LAND" a whopping ten times. The tweet was heavily "ratio'd," with over 15,000 responses compared to just under 2,000 likes. Several conservative journalists and influencers called out the hilarity of the tweet.
"SO ARE YOU," Human Events columnist Adam B. Coleman wrote back in similar, repetitive fashion.
"Never knew the ACLU were such xenophobes," YouTuber Viva Frei wrote.
Also on Thanksgiving morning, the ACLU of Virginia posted a guide on how to "decolonize" the holiday.
"As you observe Thanksgiving with your loved ones, we hope you will make space to #DecolonizeThanksgiving within your celebration to acknowledge & tell the truth about our history, even if it is uncomfortable, & honor the experience of Indigenous people," the organization wrote, alongside the guide.
Among the steps to take on the decolonization list are "teach a historically accurate story, rather than the colonized story of Thanksgiving," and "support Indigenous-owned businesses."
The national ACLU Twitter account did not acknowledge Thanksgiving at all, but made sure to announce a sale on their website on Black Friday.
