Newly confirmed Attorney General Pam Bondi is expected to direct the Department of Justice (DOJ) to establish a “Weaponization Working Group,” tasked with reviewing instances of “politicized justice” over the last four years.
The group will examine prosecutions brought against President Donald Trump while he was running for office by cases brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Special Counsel Jack Smith in Florida and Washington, DC as part of its first actions.
According to Fox News, the working group will also investigate alleged prosecutorial abuse related to key issues affecting conservatives, including the prosecution of individuals at the Capitol on January 6, FBI targeting of Catholic groups, the targeting of parents at school board meetings, and the use of the FACE Act against protesters near abortion clinics.
In addition to launching the working group, Bondi is set to end the moratorium on federal executions, reversing a policy put in place by the Biden administration in 2021. She will direct federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in cases involving violent drug trafficking crimes and other offenses deemed appropriate. Bondi is also expected to rescind DOJ policies that are "not sufficiently in line with President Trump’s death penalty executive order."
Bondi was sworn in as attorney general on Wednesday in the Oval Office, where the president told reporters she would be “as impartial as a person can be.”
“I know I’m supposed to say, ‘She’s going to be totally impartial with respect to Democrats.’ And I think she will be as impartial as a person can be,” Trump said
Bondi, a former attorney general of Florida, said she was “truly honored” to fulfill the role that Trump appointed her for. She also stated that she would “restore integrity to the Justice Department” and “fight violent crime throughout this country and throughout this world.”
