On Monday, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed an executive order directing the state to take actions in opposing the Biden administration's COVID-19 mandate for federal employees.

Ivey wrote that "[I] do hereby order and direct all of the following actions to oppose the Biden Administration's overreaching federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates and to ensure that the State of Alabama never forces anyone to take an unwanted COVID-19 vaccine."

As part of these actions proposed, the order states that "no agency, department, board, commission, or other entity within the executive branch of state government shall… seek to impose a penalty on any business or individual for noncompliance with any federally imposed requirement that has the purpose or effect of" forcing individuals to get the vaccine, or forcing employees to get vaccinated.

The order also states that state employees will not be required to receive the vaccine or show proof of vaccination to receive government services or for entry into a government building.

Ivey also added that state agencies will cooperate with the state's attorney general in efforts to sue the Biden administration over vaccine requirements.

"Effective immediately, all agencies, boards, commissions, and other entities within the executive branch of state government shall cooperate to the fullest extent possible with the Officer of the Alabama attorney General in furtherance of litigation brought by the State to challenge any federally imposed COVID-19 vaccination requirement," the order states.

In September, President Biden announced that all federal employees will be required to be vaccinated, with no option for testing.

As part of that announcement, Biden stated that businesses with 100 or more employees will be required to have their employees get vaccinated, or be subjected to regular COVID-19 testing.
