BREAKING: Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton attacked at campaign event: report

Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton was attacked at a campaign event on Sunday near Youngstown.

According to a statement released by her campaign, an armed individual lunged at Acton while she was attending the Canfield Fair in Mahoning County. Multiple people nearby were injured during the incident.

Acton’s campaign communications director, Addie Bullock, said that Acton was “grateful” for the law enforcement response to the situation.

"This kind of violence has no place in Ohio. Dr. Acton will always stand up to the chaos, hate and vitriol that pits us against one another," Bullock said.

According to a report by NBC News, Acton was not hurt in the incident and was seen remaining at the location to attend to one of the people injured. Acton is a licensed physician.

The chair of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, Christopher Anderson, confirmed in a post on social media that the incident occurred while Acton was at the county party's tent. He explained that the suspect was arrested with "multiple weapons."

“MCDP is grateful for the quick response by our local law enforcement officials as well as the Ohio State Highway Patrol providing Dr. Acton security," Anderson wrote.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a statement on X in which he expressed gratitude that Acton was not hurt and sent thoughts to those who were injured. 

"We are grateful for the quick work of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement on the scene at the Canfield Fair today when a man tried to forcefully push himself toward Dr. Acton as she was speaking and injured other attendees at the Mahoning County Democrat booth," DeWine wrote. "Violence or the threat of violence at political or public events is always unacceptable."

DeWine added that the case is being handled by law enforcement and will be "investigated thoroughly."

Acton is currently running in a close race for governor against Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy's campaign condemned Sunday's act of violence, calling it unacceptable.

“Candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence,” a spokesperson for Ramaswamy's campaign said. “What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics, and we hope ... that no one was hurt.”
