The province of Alberta will no longer make residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 quarantine. It will also stop routine testing for mild symptoms of the virus.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced the news last Wednesday. According to the Globe and Mail, Hinshaw believes that it is time for the province to treat COVID-19 as a normal part of life – similar to other viruses such as the common flu.

Alberta will also cut back on contact tracing, unless there is a high-risk situation where many people are in one place at the same time. Masks will also not be required in schools anymore once classes resume again in September.

Since the pandemic began in March 2020, Alberta has taken the strongest possible approach to moving past COVID-19 measures in Canada. Most of these changes in Alberta will begin to take effect August 16.

Despite this, however, Alberta is behind the rest of the other provinces in terms of vaccination numbers. Only 64 percent of Alberta's overall population have at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
