The woman as well as her husband attempted to swim to Mexico while the wife held the baby.
An alleged illegal immigrant smuggler has been arrested after trying to flee from authorities by jumping into the Rio Grande River to evade arrest with a baby in her arms. The incident came after a high-speed pursuit of the woman and her husband, who was operating the vehicle, but he was able to escape to Mexico.
The woman, identified as Brenda Lee Castro, was found trying to swim back to Mexico while also holding her baby in her arms after trying to evade arrest. The incident started when Castro's husband led the police in a car chase.
After stopping by the river, the woman, as well as her husband, attempted to swim to Mexico while the wife held the baby. Five illegal immigrants were also found inside the vehicle amid the incident, according to KGNS News.
Castro is facing five charges of human smuggling as well as endangering a child. The driver of the vehicle, the husband, managed to escape into Mexico after fleeing from the authorities.
The incident began after a Texas state trooper attempted to stop an SUV that was on Highway 83 and was then led in chase through Rio Bravo before the alleged smugglers tried to make their escape into Mexico.
Castro was taken to Webb County Jail. The baby was not injured during the chase and is now with a family member after Castro's arrest. The incident comes as the Trump administration has been cracking down on illegal immigration at the border and throughout the US.
As the arrest was made, the officers in the video warned that the baby, as well as the suspec,t could have both drowned because of her actions.
