The 64-year-old said that she will take part "in whatever way they want" her "just as a guest." She added, “They’re bringing back all the hosts, I think. And, you know, I’m pretty proud of that show, what it’s become and how it really speaks to the people and to politics.”
O'Donnell co-hosted the ABC talk show during seasons 10 and 18. When announcing her return, she addressed her "tense" dynamic with co-host Whoopi Goldberg before she left in 2015.
“I admired Whoopi, wanted to be on her team, had respect for her and I expected we would be like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan passing the ball back and forth, shooting and leading the team to victory,” she recalled on Monday. “And that’s not exactly what happened.”
She added that Goldberg possibly “felt encroached upon in some way,” adding that may be why it “didn’t go so well."
The announcement from O'Donnell comes as there has been a legal fight with the Trump administration's Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and parent company to "The View," ABC.
The FCC has questioned whether the ABC daytime talk show should continue its exemption from equal time rules that are applied to political programs. James Talarico was a guest on the show in February, which prompted questions from the FCC about it the show then had to air rival candidates under the equal airtime law. An inquiry from the FCC was opened but "The View," then ABC parent company Disney, claimed that the show is a "bona fide news" source, which would exempt the show from the equal time rule. The inquiry remains ongoing and has widened to other ABC stations. ABC has accused the FCC of censorship.
O'Donnell, like "The View" hosts generally, has had a long history of taking shots on President Donald Trump. The tense back and forth between the two figures came to a viral flashpoint during the debate for the 2016 election when Trump was asked by Megyn Kelly about calling women pigs and slobs. Trump cut her off the time to make the joke: "Only Rosie O'Donnell," to laughter from the debate audience.
