"Law enforcement officers confirmed this radicalized Leftist was targeting President Trump and his administration last night. Why are you lying?"
“Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy,” Obama wrote on Sunday evening. He also praised the Secret Service, noting he was “grateful” the injured agent is expected to recover.
Critics were quick to challenge Obama’s statement because the alleged shooter's manifesto had already been given to the media. Former Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said, “There is no ambiguity. It was a politically motivated attack driven by anti-Trump and anti-Christian bile. It’s wrong to downplay or obscure the obvious motive.”
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin wrote, “Let’s not pretend to be this clueless about motive.”
Utah Sen. Mike Lee added, “It was politically motivated. He made that pretty clear.”
The Republican National Committee RNC’s research account accused Obama of ignoring key facts. “Law enforcement officers confirmed this radicalized Leftist was targeting President Trump and his administration last night. Why are you lying?”
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen, a California educator. According to authorities, Allen authored a rambling manifesto outlining his desire to kill Trump administration officials “from highest to lowest.” Allen also attacked Trump's immigration policies and the president’s Christian faith, while accusing him of committing crimes. The manifesto further included criticism of Secret Service security, claiming vulnerabilities in the event’s perimeter. Allen wrote that security focused heavily on external threats while overlooking risks posed by hotel guests already inside the building.
The incident occurred Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner was underway with President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and cabinet officials in attendance. Authorities say Allen charged a Secret Service checkpoint and fired at an agent, striking the officer’s bulletproof vest. He was quickly subdued and taken into custody. Metropolitan Police Department Interim Chief Jeffrey W. Carroll said Allen had been staying at the hotel, allowing him to bypass outer security layers.
Allen is expected to be arraigned on Monday on multiple charges, including use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer.
President Trump commended law enforcement’s response following the incident. “He was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service, and they acted very quickly,” Trump said during a press conference, adding that footage of the incident had been released for transparency.
However, Trump also questioned the suitability of the venue, describing the Washington Hilton as “not a particularly secure building,” and pointed to the new White House ballroom as a solution for more robust security infrastructure.
