Biden administration blocks seven Chinese supercomputer firms for 'acting in ways that are contrary to our national security interests'

The export controls red tape intends to make it nearly impossible for China to get American technology.

The new cold war between the US and China is heating up. The current White House is following up on a blacklist policy first put into motion back when Donald Trump was in office.

Previously the Biden administration clashed with Chinese officials during a summit in Alaska where Beijing’s people accused Secretary of State Antony Blinken of being weak.

Yesterday the US military signaled their concerns with China’s encroachment on Taiwan. But domestically people have taken notice of the White House’s double standard between boycotting their own state of Georgia over new election laws, while refraining from doing the same to Beijing’s 2022 Winter Olympics over the treatment of Uyghur Muslims.

But this most recent announcement shows America stepping up in their pushback against China. Specifically in the development of missiles and military weapons.

In a press release from the US Department of Commerce, seven Chinese entities were officially placed on the entity list for export controls. They were determined to be “conducting activities that are contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States.”

Under these conditions, the firms will need to get a Commerce Department license to obtain resources access.

Seven supercomputer related companies were added: Tianjin Phytium Information Technology, Shanghai High-Performance Integrated Circuit Design Center, Sunway Microelectronics, the National Supercomputing Center Jinan, the National Supercomputing Center Shenzhen, the National Supercomputing Center Wuxi, and the National Supercomputing Center Zhengzhou.

Speaking to the Washington Post an anonymous official remarked: “These are parties that are acting in ways that are contrary to our national security interests. This is really about not having U.S. items contribute to China’s advancement of its military capabilities.”
