President Joe Biden offered his remarks on Tuesday about his administration's healthcare plan and the status of the recent pandemic stimulus while touring the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute in Columbus, Ohio.
Biden opened his speech by talking more about the latest mass shooting. It was speculated he’d talk further about gun control but the mention of that was limited.
Ten people died in yesterday's shooting at a Boulder, Colorado supermarket. The 21-year-old suspect's name is Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, and he was taken into custody.
Before leaving the White House, Biden made a statement about gun control, stating, "We can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again. I got that done when I was a senator. It passed, it was the law for the longest time and it brought down these mass killings. We should do it again."
Former President Obama echoed the same sentiments. At today’s White House Press Conference, Jen Psaki didn’t rule out the Biden administration using executive orders to push gun control regulations through.
Both Kamala Harris and President Biden embarked on a “Help is Here” tour this week to celebrate the passing of their American Rescue Plan effort. That being the latest round of stimulus bill for the US economy. Part of Biden’s recent moves included an extension on Affordable Care Act health insurance sign-ups. They’re now extended to August 15th. During his speech the President touted the near-zero premiums now possible.
Biden stated that a $100 million grant under the Affordable Care Act helped expand the facilities. At one point in the tour, Biden made a comment about how “there are probably more military members coming home with brain cancer because of exposures to toxic garbage fires in Iraq," alluding back to his son Beau Biden who succumbed to the disease.
Biden highlighted three key parts of the American Rescue Plan’s focus:
- rapidly acquire more vaccines. This would involve organizing an increased number of doses in a shorter time and provide upwards of 600 million doses, with more funding for carrying out vaccinations.
- dealing with the “economic deprivation” caused by the pandemic. This section concerns folks who lost their jobs, small businesses, and dealing with school reopenings.
- commitment to get Americans $1400 per person, including expansion of child care tax credit, among other initiatives.
The President’s commitment to the war against cancer was still on the forefront of his mind due to his closeness to the issue. He mentioned investing billions of dollars that “drug companies aren’t willing to do” to pursue a cure.
President Biden closed his speech by urging Americans to get vaccinated "when it's [their] turn."
