President Joe Biden reportedly called the chief of the National Guard Bureau Friday to apologize for the poor conditions National Guardsmen had to endure while providing security at the Capitol for Biden's inauguration ceremony, the BBC reports.
More than 25,000 National Guard troops from around the United States were deployed in Washington D.C. this week to provide extra security for the inauguration, following the storming of the Capitol building earlier this month.
Reports and photographs of National Guardsmen sleeping on the floor of the capitol building and then in parking garages went viral, invoking bipartisan outrage over the poor treatment of America's service men and women.
One of the garages housing 5,000 troops only had one restroom for the soldiers to use, Business Insider reports.
The conditions sparked concerns over exposure to car fumes as well as the spread of the coronavirus. Between 100 and 200 of those deployed tested positive for Covid-19, according to an official who spoke to Reuters.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was one of the state governors to send troops to the capitol for the inauguration, expressed his frustration with the treatment of and reason for the National Guard's deployment.
"This is a half-cocked mission at this point and the appropriate thing is to bring them home," he said on Fox News.
Amid unanimous outrage over the treatment of the soldiers, the National Guard was allowed back into the Capitol building, and off-duty troops were check into hotels and other accommodations were made, according to a joint statement from the US National Guard and US Capitol Police, Friday.
