Elon Musk vows to expose government censorship demands on X

Elon Musk says X will begin more clearly identifying government requests to remove posts or restrict accounts, giving users information about which authorities sought the action and why.

Under the planned changes, X will notify users when a government agency requests that specific content be taken down or an account be restricted. The platform also plans to identify the agency involved and provide the legal justification given for the request. The move comes as X continues to operate under different laws and regulations across countries including India, Turkey and members of the European Union. The platform has faced government demands to remove content and restrict accounts in multiple jurisdictions.

X has previously used measures including regional restrictions when complying with legal orders. The new approach is intended to make those interventions more visible to users, rather than leaving them to appear solely as ordinary platform moderation decisions.

Musk has repeatedly presented himself as a supporter of free speech since acquiring the company, formerly known as Twitter, in 2022. X continues to receive legal demands from governments seeking action against content posted on the platform.

The company has also faced disputes with regulators over requests involving political speech, journalists and other users. At the same time, X must comply with laws in countries where it operates or risk penalties and other regulatory action.

The new labeling system would make the source of a government request visible when X takes action based on it. Users would be able to see whether an intervention came from the platform itself or followed a request from a state authority.
