"Decency, decency, decency."
President Joe Biden took some digs at President-elect Donald Trump as he made comments in memory of former President Jimmy Carter who passed away Sunday at the age of 100.
Biden said that he "lost a dear friend" on Sunday and noted that Carter was the model of "what it means to live a life of meaning and purpose, a life of principle, faith and humility.”
When a reporter asked Biden it there was anything that Trump could take away from Carter's legacy, Biden replied, "Decency, decency, decency. ... Can you imagine Jimmy Carter walking by someone who needs something and just keeps walking? Can you imagine Jimmy Carter referring to someone by the way they look or the way they talk?"
According to the Daily Mail, Biden added, "I can't, I can't." During his time in politics, Trump has at times made fun of political opponents for how they look during speeches or in messaging, including Biden himself.
Trump offered a heartfelt message of condolences for Carter's passing: "I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter. Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as president understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the greatest nation in history, the challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans."
He added, “For that, we owe him a debt of gratitude. Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter family and their loved ones during this difficult time."
Carter, known for being a peanut farmer before his time in the White House, served in the US Navy, as governor of Georgia, and became president in 1976. The 39th president’s term is remembered for record inflation and the Iranian hostage crisis. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering a peace deal between Israel and Egypt. However, Republican challenger Ronald Reagan defeated him after one term.
In March 2023, Biden said Carter had asked him to deliver the eulogy at his funeral. While final funeral arrangements are pending, public memorials are being planned both in Atlanta and Washington DC, as per the Carter Center, according to USA Today.
