Biden administration Sec. of State Antony Blinken told staffers at the State Department not to use "problematic" terms such as "manpower," "mother," and "father" in a memo.

According to a memo from the State Department obtained by the National Review, in early February, Blinken told staff about the dangers of "misgendering" as well as using terms that “can be problematic” such as "manpower" as well as “son/daughter" and “husband/wife.”

The terms preferred were words such as “labor force,” “everyone,” “folks,” “you all,” and “parent,” “child,” and “spouse” or “partner” instead, the memo stated.

The note sent to staff was titled, “Modeling DEIA: Gender Identity Best Practices."

It was sent in order to “increase understanding of gender identity and provide guidance on gender identity language and best practices that support an inclusive work environment.”

Adding further on the topics of "gender," Blinken's note read that gender identity is the “innermost concept of self as masculine, feminine, a blend of both, or neither."

It instructed that when speaking about military personnel, representatives of the government agency should “avoid using phrases like ‘brave men and women on the front lines,’ but something like 'brave soldiers'”

Gender “may or may not correspond with one’s sex assigned at birth," the note continued. It further said that “commonly used pronouns could include she/her, he/him, they/them, and ze/zir," and these are a "personal decision that should be respected."

However, the note did add that employees should not “pressure someone to state their pronouns,” and that mistakes in “misgendering” with pronouns should be handled with “subtlety and grace.” A spokeswoman from the State Department told the outlet that they would not comment on leaked documents.
