Former New York City Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio was rumored to have confirmed to colleagues that he planned to run for Congress, in order to represent the newly established 10th district of New York.

The rumor became official on Wednesday when de Blasio announced the formation an Exploratory Committee.

"Our neighborhoods need help as we recover from Covid. Our nation needs help as democracy is threatened and working people struggle. I am ready to serve to continue the fight against inequality. Today I am forming an Exploratory Committee for the new #NY10."

The 10th Congressional district, drawn out of New York’s latest redistricting process, is expected to be finalized by Friday. The area used to be represented by Democratic Congressman Jerry Nadler, but he opted to face Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney in the newly established 12th district.

Both The New York Times and the Washington Post have said this week that the expected end result of the New York redistricting process includes less favor for Democrats. The latest remapping was done after the previous congressional map pitch was declared unconstitutional by the courts.

This latest revision was compiled by court-appointed expert Jonathan Cervas. Democrat Representatives, such as Sean Patrick Maloney, have reluctantly agreed to abide by the new redistricting plans.

Bill de Blasio previously entertained the possibility of running for governor of New York late last year, but publicly bowed out in January. The former mayor then considered running for the 11th congressional district the following month.

An unnamed source speaking to the Post relayed how de Blasio has lost the support of the Orthodox Jewish community, which is heavily represented in the 10th district and said,  "The average Joe on the street believes de Blasio is the worst mayor ever."

The projected zone of the 10th district includes parts of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan, including de Blasio’s neighborhood in Park Slope.

State Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assemblyman Robert Carroll have also expressed intentions to run for the seat. Primary elections are scheduled for August 23.
