"To be the first transgender woman competing in surfing hasn’t been an easy ride emotionally but the amount of support I’ve been showed has been phenomenal..." said Lowerson.

A biological male has won the 2022 West Coast Suspensions Longboard & Logger State Championships in Australia with a staggering point lead over female competitors.

On Sunday, the competition wrapped up, with Sasha Jane Lowerson winning first place in both the Open Women’s Longboard and Open Women’s Logger.

In the Longboard division, Lowerson won by 4 points over the next finisher, and in the Logger division, Lowerson won by around 2.5 points.

Those biological women that finished below Lowerson trailed behind each other by around 1 point, and in one case, three points.

Speaking with Surfing Western Australia, Lowerson said, "To be the first transgender woman competing in surfing hasn’t been an easy ride emotionally but the amount of support I’ve been showed has been phenomenal and I’m so grateful to be involved, welcomed and embraced within the longboard community in Australia."

According to Beach Grit, Lowerson previously competed as a male Ryan Egan, winning the male division the WA longboard titles in 2019.

The surfing outlet described Lowerson "destroy[ing]" the opposition, calling it a "one-sided" contest.

They also noted that Lowerson was "absolutely demolishing the women’s division."

The news of Lowerson's win comes as American skateboarder Taylor Silverman published a message on Instagram calling out Red Bull for allowing a transgender woman to compete against biological women, willing thousands of dollars in the process.

"A biological man with a clear advantage won the women’s division, best trick, and also won multiple qualifiers. This took away the opportunity that was meant for women to place and earn money," wrote Silverman in an email to Red Bull Senior Sports Marketing Manager Erich Dummer. "What happened was unfair and at the time I was too uncomfortable to speak up."
