H.R. 426, more commonly known as the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, has received the support of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), backing the legislation Friday that would prohibit schools that receive federal funds from allowing biological males to compete in women's sports.
"The Republican Study Committee formally endorses H.R. 426, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, introduced by Rep. Greg Steube, to bar schools that accept federal funds from letting biological males compete against biological females in athletic events designated for women or girls," the committee said in a press statement Friday first obtained by The Daily Wire.
"RSC is committed to preserving female athletes' legally guaranteed right to compete on a level playing field," the RSC said in its press statement on the matter. "The 50th anniversary of Title IX is just months away and House Democrats should be forced to show whether they still support women's sports. We support the use of a discharge petition to bring this bill to the floor."
The bill, sponsored by RSC member Greg Steube of Florida, would make it a violation of federal law for recipients of federal funds to allow biological males to compete against female athletes in women's sports. H.R. 426 specifies that the term "sex" would be based on an individual's reproductive biology at birth.
In a statement released on Friday, Penny Nance, the CEO and president of Concerned Women for American Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC), applauded the committee's decision. "After 50 years of progress for women and girls, Congress must step in and save Title IX from doom," Nance said. "What's happening in women's sports today under the NCAA and Biden Administration defies science and common sense and is an affront to every female athlete in America. This radical agenda to obliterate the enduring differences between the sexes is draconian and erases women’s inherent dignity and status under the law."
Supporters of the bill protecting women's sports from biological males agree with Nance. In light of a growing number of concerned parents, female athletes, and Title IX advocates, lawmakers have begun to see the issue as a matter of the law.
RSC executive committee member Jeff Duncan of South Carolina put it this way:
“Why would we send federal funds to schools that permit an unlevel playing field by allowing biological males to compete against girls and women? Female athletes have a legally guaranteed right to compete with other women on a level playing field, and this must be protected for the future of women’s sports," Duncan said.
