Organizers of Black Lives Matter protests in Calgary are urging those who participated to get tested for COVID-19 and to self-isolate for 14 days.

Throughout last week, Albertans gathered in the thousands to protest and make their feelings known about police brutality and racism according to the Calgary Herald.

"It’s unfortunate we are forced to protest during a global pandemic. The decisions and actions of local, provincial and federal governments and their police forces are the reason we must protest. They’re leaving us with no other choice but to gather in large numbers during a global health crisis," said the group Calgary Against Police Brutality in a post on Instagram.

"We are asking all protesters from every event of this week, if possible for your life situation, to self-isolate for 14 days. We are also asking everyone to get testing for COVID-19."

Mayor Naheed Nenshi told reporters he felt "extraordinary pride" over the protests but also encourage isolation and testing for the participants.

“I do think it makes real sense for those who have been in any situation where they’ve been with a lot of other people to double down on their own efforts. If you were at one of those protests, you’ve got to wear a mask. And you’ve got to be even super more careful in all your activities for the next 14 days,” Nenshi said.

7,138 COVID-19 cases and 336 active cases are confirmed in Alberta. 6,656 people have recovered from coronavirus in the province.
