Authorities in Los Angeles County have recovered additional human remains near the Palos Verdes Peninsula following the discovery of a human leg that washed ashore earlier last week.

Palos Verdes Estates Police Captain Aaron Belda confirmed on Thursday that investigators and coroner officials recovered a second leg and a femur in the area, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times. The recovery comes after the first leg was discovered on Wednesday by a hiker when it washed up on shore. Belda also confirmed that a cadaver dog from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was brought in to aid the search, but no further remains were found.

The remains were discovered near the location where a capsized boat belonging to two missing fishermen washed ashore earlier in the week. Belda stated that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner is working to identify the remains and determine whether they are connected to the missing men.

The two fishermen launched their boat from San Pedro on Monday afternoon, despite weather forecasters warning smaller vessels about waves reaching up to 10 feet. When the men failed to return, they were reported missing the following day. Their overturned boat was later found along the shoreline. The US Coast Guard conducted a search and rescue operation on Christmas Eve but was forced to suspend efforts due to dangerous tides and strong winds.

This marks the second instance of human remains being discovered in the area in recent weeks. Last month, a skull and other bones washed ashore in the same region. Authorities have indicated there are no plans for additional search operations at this time.
