Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said that two students, including the suspected shooter who was a teenage student at the school, and one teacher are dead.
As to why the police did not release the identity or gender of the shooter, Barnes said that was to protect the family of the shooter, who is "also someone's child." The shooter was dead upon police arrival at the school and officers did not fire any shots.
Of the six others who were injured, two were students who were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Four other students are being treated at area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Barnes said that the police would not be releasing any information about the age, gender, or any other identifying information about the shooter at that time. He said that the motive of the shooter is not currently known, but an investigation is currently underway.
A handgun was the weapon used, a 9 mm. The shooting was confined to "one space," the officers said, and was not in multiple locations. "There's no evidence that anyone else was injured that was not in that age group," Barnes said.
