Multiple people were reportedly injured on Monday morning after a shooting at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said in a press conference that officers "located a juvenile who they believed was responsible for the this deceased in the building."
Barnes said that police believe the shooter was a student at the school, and that the extent of the injuries of those who were transported range from minor injuries to life-threatening. The Madison Police Department said Monday afternoon that three people were killed and nine were injured, saying that it was "erroneously shared 5 were deceased." The department said that "Nine in total were injured, including the three deceased."
According to Channel 300, the shooting was reported just before 11 am local time at 4901 East Buckeye Road. Roads in the area are currently closed off as law enforcement investigates.
Madison police said that the shooter is "down," ABC News reported. According to Fox News, the Abundant Life Christian School has around 400 students in kindergarten through high school and serves around 50 different churches in the Madison area. A law enforcement source told CNN that the shooter used a 9mm pistol.
In a post to Facebook, the school asked for prayers, writing, "Prayers Requested! Today, we had an active shooter incident at ALCS. We are in the midst of following up. We will share information as we are able."
White House Senior Deputy Press Sec Emilie Simons said that President Biden "has been briefed" on the shooting, and "Senior White House officials are in touch with local counterparts in Madison to provide support as needed."
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers wrote, "I am closely monitoring the incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond."
Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) wrote, "My sincere condolences and prayers for all the victims of the tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School. I will continue to closely monitor the situation."
Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) wrote, "I have been briefed on the active shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison and my heart goes out to all those impacted. My office is in touch with local and state officials, and I stand ready to assist law enforcement and anyone affected."
