On Thursday, 18 people were arrested after they entered House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office,  protesting for "climate action."

The Sunrise Movement, a group known for shutting down streets in protest of climate change, said that they entered McCarthy’s office to demand for "him to avert a government shutdown and fund climate action we desperately need."

Photos show members of the group holding signs that read, "The GOP hates Gen Z," "climate action not shut down," and "Green New Deal now."

"Young people are here because Kevin McCarthy and other Republicans are playing political games with our lives," te group added in another post. "We’re over this bullshit. We demand climate action NOW."

The group said that 18 "young people" had been arrested as a result of the protest inside McCarthy’s Capitol Hill office. In one post, they said that students from across the country had traveled to the capitol to lobby for "climate action."

The arrests come after 7 people were arrested inside McCarthy's office earlier this month, this time protesting in favor of the Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that combats HIV/AIDS.

Congress is working to pass a continuing resolution to avoid a shutdown, which would occur just after midnight on October 1 if no funding is passed.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has vowed not to vote for any funding bills that include funding that goes towards Ukraine, to which the US has sent over $100 billion since February of 2022.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
