An active shooting incident took place at a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan on Wednesday afternoon. A large police presence was seen at Temple Israel, as well as smoke coming from the building. The gunman was reportedly shot dead by armed security at the building and has been identified as Ayman Ghazaleh, who was originally from Lebanon but became a naturalized US citizen.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Ghazaleh was born in Lebonon and then came to the US in 2011.

"The tragic attack on Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan was carried out by Ayman Mohamad Ghazali," DHS said. "He was born in Lebanon on January 4, 1985. He entered the United States on May 10, 2011 at Detroit Metropolitan International Airport on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen after alien relative and fiancé petitions filed in December 2009 were approved in April 2010. He applied for naturalization on October 20, 2015 and was granted U.S. citizenship on February 5, 2016 under the Obama administration."

Per Fox News' Bill Melugin, "I’m told by law enforcement source that the suspected shooter at the Michigan synagogue was armed with a rifle, rammed a vehicle into the building and was killed in shootout w/ armed security. I’m told vehicle caught on fire and the suspect’s body is burned." He later reported that the vehicle used in the attack was registered to a naturalized US citizen from Lebanon who lives in nearby Dearborn, Michigan.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office was at the scene as well as multiple other agencies "for reports of an active shooter," and that emergency personnel were "clearing the building." The office told reporters at the scene that as of just after 1:30 pm, no injuries had been reported "except potentially the shooter." The sheriff later said that one person was injured, the security guard, who was hit by the vehicle.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said that something inside the suspect’s vehicle caught fire. Multiple law enforcement officials briefed on the scene told CNN that emergency responders discovered what appeared to be a large amount of explosives in the back of the car.

FBI Director Kash Patel said, "FBI personnel are on the scene with partners in Michigan and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan."

Police sources told local news that authorities believe a truck intentionally crashed into the building and caught fire. The smoke that was seen at the scene is from that vehicle.
