American Airlines Flight 292 was near Turkmenistan when it was forced to turn around and land in Rome due to a "possible security issue."
An American Airlines flight traveling from New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to India was diverted to Italy under a fighter jet escort following a bomb threat.
American Airlines Flight 292, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, was near Turkmenistan when it was forced to turn around and land in Rome due to a "possible security issue," the airline said. The plane, carrying approximately 285 passengers, was escorted by two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets after the alert, according to a report by the Daily Mail. The flight had originally departed JFK at around 8:30 pm ET on Saturday.
“Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our customers for their understanding. We are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as the situation develops,” American Airlines stated.
This incident follows the recent controversy involving American Airlines last January, when one of its planes collided with a US Army helicopter in Washington, DC, resulting in no survivors among the 64 people on board.
Additionally, earlier this month, an American Airlines flight in Texas was evacuated and delayed for nearly five hours after a passenger’s Wi-Fi hotspot was named “There is a bomb on the flight.”
This is a breaking story.
