Arizona State Senator Otoniel "Tony" Navarrete has been arrested for allegedly molesting two children. He has been charged with sexual misconduct with a minor but maintains he is innocent. The Washington Post reports.

Navarrete was arrested on August 5 after Phoenix police arranged to have one of his accusers call and confront the Democrat. The police then heard and recorded Navarrete apologizing for molesting the child.

Two teens had come forward accusing Navarrete of molestation. One, who is now 16, "told detectives Navarrete first molested him at a home in Phoenix when he was 12 or 13 and continued to do so on several occasions until he was 15." According to the Post, the second teen, 13, "said Navarrete had once attempted to touch his genitals."

"I adamantly deny all allegations that have been made and will pursue all avenues in an effort to prove my innocence," Navarrete said in a statement.

Navarrete posted bond on Saturday and is facing five felony charges. The Arizona Republic reports five related to sexual conduct with a minor, one for attempted sexual conduct with a minor and one for child molestation.

The Democrat Senator was first elected in 2018 after serving in the Arizona House. He was re-elected in last years' election and served as a founding member of the legislature's LGBTQ+ caucus. There will be an appointment to fill the remainder of his term in the Senate.
