"We believe that he was actually casing out this area to commit the crime. That’s a pattern that criminals do, and that’s what he was doing."
Authorities held a press conference on Tuesday evening regarding the Brown University shooting investigation, during which police revealed that the suspect being sought was seen in the area hours ahead of the Saturday shooting casing the area. Three days have passed since the shooting that killed two students, and no suspect is in custody. Authorities have said that the shooter did not yell anything that would have indicated a motive for the shooting.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said, "there is no information that the investigative team has about motive. zero. Zero. There's nothing about—even if, even if taking at face value what one or two witnesses may have said, about what something was said. Okay, and there are many witnesses that say nothing was said. There's nothing about what we know was perhaps said that indicates any kind of motive that is related at all to ethnicity or political outlook or culture. There's nothing at all that we know right now about that, and I think that that is a dangerous road to go down, particularly in today's part."
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said that the suspect had been in the neighborhood at around 10:30 in the morning, hours before the shooting took place on Saturday evening. "We believe that he was actually casing out this area to commit the crime. That’s a pattern that criminals do, and that’s what he was doing."
Authorities urged the public to submit any video they may have of the suspect in the neighborhood, including from car cameras such as Teslas. "We also know in this profession that many criminals will case out an area weeks and days prior. And so it’s important for us to ensure that we can have you look at that," Perez said, referring to video of the suspect played, "and help us."
