"If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem," Biden said.
President Joe Biden has said that he would consider withdrawing from the presidential race if a "medical condition" were to arise.
Biden made these comments in a BET News interview that was released on Wednesday. When asked if there was any scenario that would make him reconsider staying in the race, Biden, who is currently trailing behind former President Donald Trump in swing state polls, responded that a significant health issue would be a determining factor.
“If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem,” Biden said.
Biden also reflected on his initial expectations for his presidency, mentioning that he had anticipated he would “move on” and “pass it to somebody else.” However, he decided to run again due to the polarized state of the country and his belief in his own experience and wisdom.
“You may remember Ed, I said I was going to be a transitional candidate, and I thought I would be able to move on from this and pass it on to somebody else,” the president said to BET’s Ed Gordon. “But I didn’t anticipate things getting so, so, so divided. And quite frankly, I think the only thing age brings is a little bit of wisdom.”
These comments mark a slight shift from a previous interview with ABC News earlier this month, where Biden stated he would only drop out if the "Lord almighty" directed him to do so.
Although Biden has not been diagnosed with any medical condition, concerns have been raised, particularly following a report that a Parkinson’s specialist met with White House officials. This has further fueled speculation about the president's health, although no official diagnosis has been made public.
