"Democrats deliver performances, Republicans deliver results," House Speaker Mike Johnson said.
The package includes a number of agenda items and campaign promises from Trump, including no taxes on tips, an extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts, and an increase in border enforcement. On Wednesday evening, leading up to the floor vote, a procedural vote had to be cleared in order to start the official vote process. There were some GOP holdouts at the time, however, the legislative hurdle was cleared early on Thursday morning.
Afterwards, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) decided to speak on the floor of the House for over 8 hours in a move that stalled the final vote on the bill. He made a number of remarks, calling the package the "Big Ugly Bill" throughout the hours-long speech.
Jeffries ended the speech 12 minutes after breaking the previous floor speech record that was set by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, per Politico. After the speech from Jeffries, Johnson commented that the speech was an "utter waste of everyone's time" as well as commented that the record-breaking speech, only by a few minutes, was an example of how "Democrats deliver performances" and that "Republicans deliver results," in a nod to the package.
After the bill passed in the House, Johnson said in a statement, "Republicans in Congress have succeeded in our mission to enact President Trump's America First agenda. And importantly, we did it in record time, so that the effects of this nation-shaping legislation can be felt by the American people as soon as possible."
"Today, the House has passed generational legislation that permanently lowers taxes for families and job creators, secures the border, unleashes American energy dominance, restores peace through strength, reduces spending more than any other bill ever has, and makes government more efficient and effective for all Americans," Johnson added.
