The US Capitol Police headquarters in northeast Washington DC has been evacuated after a police K9 alerted to a suspicious vehicle.

The vehicle, according to Capitol Police, was parked in the 100 block of D Street NE. The headquarters building was evacuated out an "abundance of caution," police said on X.

The building lies just one block of Capitol grounds, sitting closest to the Hart and Russell Senate Office Buildings and the Supreme Court. The building also lies just south of Union Station.

In response to the suspicious vehicle, roadways in the area are closed including: "D Street, NE, between Massachusetts and Louisiana Avenues - First Street, NE, between Columbus Circle and C Street - Delaware Avenue, between Columbus Circle and C Street - 2nd Street, NE, between Massachusetts Avenue and C Street - E/B Massachusetts Avenue, NE, between North Capitol and D Streets," according to the DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
